Update on Ontario Government COVID-19 Restrictions

Hello Sturgeon Point Community,

By now, everyone has likely heard about the new Ontario Government COVID-19 restrictions.  While the restrictions affect everyone, SPA feels it necessary to point out how the restrictions affect our community directly.

The new restrictions ordered the immediate closure of outdoor recreational amenities, including playgrounds, tennis courts and golf courses.  As such, SPA must close our properties – the playground, public beach and wharf.  The leaf dump will remain open.  While we will not tape the areas off, we ask the community to please respect the closures until we are out of lockdown, which will hopefully end after the six weeks that started April 8th (approximately May 20th, however, I won’t be surprised if it is extended again to cover Victoria Day weekend).

If any of you are like me, you may be feeling like a caged bird.  I find it difficult to be within the confines of my home for extended periods of time.  Although there are restrictions, please do take care of your physical and mental health by continuing to get outside for walks, runs and bike rides, to take advantage of our beautiful lake as the weather warms with swimming, canoeing, kayaking and SUP.

Off-Road Vehicles in CoKL

There has been a lot of talk, and some community concerns voiced, around the changes made to provincial legislation regarding Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) use on highways and municipal roads in the City of Kawartha Lakes.  As a result, a task force has been formed and “the goal is to provide Council with recommendations based on research and public consultation that will help expand and enhance ORV use activity across the municipality.”

At least one member of the Sturgeon Point community has already sent an email to Councillor Doug Elmslie and the Hon. Laurie Scott (Haliburton—Kawartha Lakes—Brock), Minister of Infrastructure, voicing concern about these vehicles being allowed to be driven on the small roads in our community.

In Memory of Norman WRIGHT 1958 – 2020

Norman died peacefully at home in Toronto on December 7, 2020 after a courageous 16 month battle with a glioblastoma brain tumour.  He dealt with this disease and treatment bravely, without complaint.

Loving husband of Barbara Allan and dear father to Cooper. Predeceased by his father William and survived by his mother Barbara, his brother Bruce and his sister Elizabeth (Michael) and his two nephews Zachary and Nicholas. 

He will be dearly missed by family, and friends from his early days at school through to his recent working life at IBM Canada. Norman was an optimistic person who never had a bad thing to say about anyone. His 62 years were filled doing the things he loved with his family including travelling, spending time in the outdoors, hiking, camping and canoeing.  He also had many varied interests including his passion for cars, stamp and coin collecting, everything dinosaur, and WWII airplanes. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Sunnybrook Foundation and the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care (Mount Sinai Foundation) would be appreciated.
