Update from the SPA President

Greetings SPA Members,

The New Year is upon us and I hope that it finds all of our friends and family happy and healthy and looking forward to all the possibilities it brings.  This is a quick notice to keep you all informed of recent events around the Point.

New signs and posts:  Some of you may have noticed that there are new street name signs and posts up around the village.  Some of our signs were aging and needed to be replaced.  In order to preserve the continuity of our signage, SPA made arrangements with the City that they would provide the new posts, and we were allowed to have signs made in the style of our choice (at our expense), rather than having the City install the official municipal style signs.  There are still a couple of signs that have yet to be installed but we are very happy that we were able to preserve the look and feel of our hand-painted signage throughout the village.  Many thanks to Eric Jordan and the past board, John Lyon, Jim Milford and Jason Vehrs for their work on this project.

Social Events: The last social event of the 2012 season was the annual Halloween celebration held on Saturday, October 27th.  In the morning there were crafts, pumpkin carving, face-painting and refreshments at the park and despite the cool, rainy weather we had a good turnout of about 25 kids and their families.  In the evening the kids donned their costumes and made their way around the village trick-or-treating.  A good time was had by all thanks to Judy Haverkort, all the volunteers who made the party possible and the households who doled out candy.

Our next social event will be the annual Easter Party at the park to be held on Easter weekend: Saturday, March 30th.  Keep your eye on the SPA website and facebook page for details!  If anyone is interested in helping out with this event please contact me or Judy.

Sturgeon Point History Project:  Liane Kennedy has spent the past couple of years researching the history of Sturgeon Point and the families who have spent time here over many generations.  Her displays and blog entries have been a wonderful source of information and entertainment and are the start of a thorough archive of our history.  We are saddened to learn that Liane has decided to step down from her duties as coordinator of the project; her efforts are greatly appreciated.   At this time the History Project is looking for new volunteers to take over where Liane has left off.  If you are interested please contact the Project at [email protected] or visit the blog at http://stpthistoryproject.blogspot.ca/.

The Good Ol Hockey Game…..

The good old hockey game!
Its the best game you can name!

It is that time of year to sharpen your blades, tape your sticks and pray for soft landings, the days and times for our annual shinny and skating have been booked!

Here are the dates, times, & places:

Friday, Dec 28: 4-6 PM – Fenelon Falls Arena (the new one!), 27 Veterans Way
Saturday, Dec 29:  2-4 PM – Fenelon Falls Arena, 27 Veterans Way
Sunday, Dec 30: 11AM-1 PM – Bobcaygeon Arena, 51 Mansfield Dr.

For those of you who haven’t participated before, we use 2/3′s of the rink for shinny and 1/3 for recreational skaters, little ones and UN observers. We play 5 minute periods split between younger skaters (roughly 12 and under) and the rest of the motley crew. This keep the little ones out of harms way and the old guys get a break every five minutes to catch their breath.

Please share them with anyone you think that might be interested in joining in the fun and games.

This a great deal, just $20 for families $10 for singles / day.

Having seen the pace of play in years gone by, we recommend the use helmets for one and all. Trust me you won’t be the only one out there sporting protection.

CoKL Heritage Plan

This week and next, the City of Kawartha Lakes are holding meetings to discuss the Heritage and Cultural Plan.  This includes discussing the heritage and cultural aspect of Sturgeon Point.

There will be representation from SPA at tonight’s meeting, but we are encouraging all to attend.  We apologize about the short notice, but we just have been informed about these meetings.

 

Help us identify the City of Kawartha Lakes’ Cultural Assets

November 28, 2012 – The City of Kawartha Lakes with funding support from the Government of Ontario is undertaking a Cultural Master Plan and Mapping Inventory project. The purpose of the project is to leverage the rich cultural resources of the community to support planning and economic development, and to increase awareness of these resources for both residents and tourists.

The City of Kawartha Lakes with funding support from the Government of Ontario is undertaking a Cultural Master Plan and Mapping Inventory project. The purpose of the project is to leverage the rich cultural resources of the community to support planning and economic development, and to increase awareness of these resources for both residents and tourists.

The project is being undertaken in two phases. The first is a Cultural Mapping process aimed at identifying the rich and diverse cultural assets that exist across the City. A significant amount of research has been completed but we need YOUR input and knowledge to ensure we capture as complete an inventory as possible. Please participate by attending one of following three Cultural Mapping Forums.

Hello Sturgeon Pointers,

The last of our social events at the park for 2012 was a great (if not wet) success!  Thanks to Judy Havercort for organizing, and to everyone who contributed to and participated in the Halloween Party and Trick or Treating on October 27th.  The park has now been prepared for the winter: the port-a-potty has been removed, the grounds have been tended to and the toys have been wrangled.  We encourage people to continue to use the park throughout the fall/winter/spring since it is just as enjoyable now as in the summer. 

There appears to be an anonymous network of generous people who donate toys to the Park and Public beach.  This is greatly appreciated by the kids and parents as it adds to the fun of spending time at both locations.  We do request that when dropping toys off you ensure that they are in like new condition with no broken parts.   Please also ensure that the toys donated to the park be limited to sand box toys.  This summer there were other types dropped off that ended up spread out over the property, which created a mess and resulted in more time clearing the way for lawn maintenance.  While at the park or beach, if you see any toys that have gotten damaged please put them in the garbage box on site. 

Something we all need to be diligent about is how to deal with garbage at the Park, Public Beach and Upper Wharf .  All garbage, especially food related or diapers, should be placed in one of the garbage cans inside the box by the road (at the Wharf, the box is on the east side of the rain shelter near the bottom of the new steps).  Please note: there are other garbage cans at the Park for use during social events.  Please do not put anything in these other receptacles as they are not “put out” on garbage day and will draw racoons and other unwanted critters who spread the contents around the grounds.
