Algae! Doh!

On Saturday morning we’ll be hosting an informative meeting with multiple presentations. All deal with issues revolving around the health of our lake. The main event will be an Algae Workshop, presented by Dr. Emily Porter-Goff, who is heading up a two year study on algae in our lakes. The study was commissioned by the Kawartha Lakes Stewards Association and sponsored by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Dr. Porter-Goff will discuss the important role that algae play in the lake’s ecosystem. Algae can also cause problems, and these will be discussed too. We will also get a chance to look at samples of common algae in our lake. You can even bring in water samples from the lake or your property so that Dr. Porter-Goff can identify it right there with her microscope!

In addition to the algae workshop, the morning’s agenda includes three other short presentations:

  1. Update on the Sturgeon Lake Management Plan (David Pridham Kawartha Conservation)
  2. Update on the Lindsay-Ops Landfill (Chris Appleton, Public Review Committee, Lindsay-Ops Landfill)
  3. Special presentation by Mayor Ric Mcgee on the CoKL’s environmental initiatives.

There will be coffee and refreshments will be served after the presentations. See you Saturday!

Road Paving Work has Started!

Second Street has been ripped up and covered with gravel, and bottom of Third Street has just started receiving the same treatment. Removal of the old asphalt surface will continue on Monday morning (July 11), and will likely be completed that day. There will be no road work done on Friday or the weekend.

The paving crew is not expected to arrive for approximately one week after the initial roadwork is completed. In the meantime, please excercise caution when driving along Second and Third Streets!

Updated Village Maps

This year we’ve released an updated version of the Sturgeon Point Village Map. This map includes all of the residents’ names, and is a very useful map when trying to identify who lives where within our community. This is not only useful for relative newcomers, but also for those with long generation-scale roots at the Point.

We’ve stepped it up a bit this year by involving the Fleming College Geomatics Institute in the creation of the updated map. With the help of their expertise, we’ve extended the map beyond the traditional boundary of the Village to include all of Sandy Point Road. The new map is in colour, and it is printed on semi-glossy paper at a 18: x 24 format. This map looks terrific and is quite easy to read.

We have a sufficient number of maps to provide one for every house and cottage on the Point. The printing cost at the larger colour format was not insignificant, and so the distribution of the maps will be limited to households with at least one SPA member. Once you sign up or renew your membership for 2011, you can receive a map for you home or cottage.
