Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club Awarded Regatta of the YEAR!

On January 28, 2011, the Canadian Yachting Association announced that Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club was the winner of the 2010 CYA Regatta of the Year. The CYA City of Kingston Regatta of the Year Award will be presented by CYA to SLSC for its hosting of the 2010 Canadian Laser Masters Championships that took place over 3 days of great sailing in July 2010.

The Masters Regatta involved a huge effort from an army of Sturgeon volunteers – it was in every way a community wide effort.  Many people provided beds to the sailors; many prepared the community breakfasts and dinners; many were on the water helping out; the harbour team got boats launched and back to shore; the scorers were timely; the prizes were wonderful…The masters sailors – aged 35 to 77- raved about the accommodations, about the meals, about the racing, about the surroundings and above all about how organized and helpful and friendly the volunteers were.  The Sailing Club extends a giant thank you to everyone who pitched in to make this regatta what it was – the best in Canada for 2010!

New Look and Feel for the SPA Web Site

You may have noticed a slightly new look to our web site. As promised, we’ve started on our task of updating the site’s features and functions. We’re working on a number of things over the winter so that the site can be more useful to our community. Part of that upgrade includes a new calendar page. Other features will be pointed out in posts like this as we roll them out.

I invite anyone who has any suggestions or comments about what they’d like to see on the web site to submit them via email to [email protected]. I promise that we’ll read them all.

Annual Sturgeon Point Shinny

Once again, it is that time of year where hockey players of all shapes and sizes, come together to strap on the skates, tape the sticks, and skate like the wind.

For those of you who haven’t participated before, we use 3/4’s of the rink for shinny and 1/4 for recreational skaters, little ones and UN observers. We play 5 minute periods split between younger skaters (roughly 12 and under) and the rest of the motley crew. This keep the little ones out of harms way and the old guys get a break every five minutes to catch their breath.

Here are the details, please share them with anyone you think that might be interested in joining in the fun and games.

The times are as follows:

Tuesday Dec 28: 2-4 PM
Wednesday Dec 29:  2:30-4:30 PM
Thursday Dec 30: 3-5 PM.

Located at the Fenelon Falls Arena.

This a great deal, just $20 for families $10 for singles / day.

Having seen the pace of play in years gone by, I recommend the use helmets for one and all. Trust me you won’t be the only one out there sporting protection.

See you on the ice.

Special thanks goes out to Larry Thomas who has been instrumental in the organization of this fun event each year.
